6 secrets to getting your braces off for your Big Day.

It’s that time of year again… Prom’s are just around the corner.

If you are nearly finished your brace treatment, or you’ve just started and you want to be finished for next year…or if you have another kind of “BIG DAY” to plan for, here are 6 tips that will help.

  1. KEEP YOUR MOUTH CLEAN

Clean braces are happy braces! If there is gunk around your braces, you stand the risk of causing permanent staining your teeth. And if your gums start to swell up, they will start to bleed. Not a good look.

You can read about how to keep braces clean and watch a short video.

  2. CUT OUT THE FIZZY DRINKS

Fizzy drinks are acidic which means they can dissolve away the enamel of your teeth. And it’s a double whammy if they also contain sugar as that can cause tooth decay.

If your orthodontist sees damage starting to happen, we may have to temporarily stop your treatment until your fizzy drink habit has stopped.

  3. BE INFORMED!

It’s a good thing for parents to have a bit of background knowledge about orthodontic treatment so that the whole family can support you throughout your treatment.

Our website has plenty of content including general information about orthodontics and brace care videos.

  4. KEEP YOUR BRACES IN ONE PIECE

Continual breakages really slow things down, as well as needing more trips to your orthodontist for repairs. Be sure to follow the advice given to you by your orthodontic team (stay off the toffees!).

  5. DON’T MISS YOUR APPOINTMENTS

Failed appointments mean that your brace treatment will become less effective. It means that at some stages your teeth may not be moving at all and that your braces will be on for longer.

  6. WEAR YOUR ELASTICS AS ADVISED

Often towards the end of treatment we ask our patients to wear elastic bands on the braces. This is usually so that we can get the teeth into as perfect a position as we can.

If the elastic are not worn as advised, your treatment can drag on! So try as hard as you can…the end is probably in sight!

And if it doesn’t work out?

We can’t always get braces off for proms. Maybe because we had to start treatment a little later for you, maybe your treatment is complex and has taken a bit longer, maybe their have been breakages or missed appointments along the way.

But if we can, we will get you there on time!
